J.K. Simmons & Vincent Cassel : Whiplash & Black Swan

Recently i watched "Whiplash", and i admired the character "Fletcher" played by the great actor J.K. Simmons. While fascinated by his performance, another movie character was flashing in my head. He was "Thomas" in "Black Swan" played also by the distinguished man Vincent Cassel. So i'm gonna tell you what are the common impressions that those two characters made on me.

What i can tell for sure is that both them wants their students to become perfect, and that by making a lot of pressure on them. And both victims suffered mentally because of that.

What they don't have in common both of Thomas and Fletcher, is that Vincent was colder than Simmons. Since he don't like yelling a lot. However he was an ignoring guy, who leaves his dancers in a doubt.

.Black Swan:

Vincent Cassel as Thomas LeRoy

Nina (Portman) is a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her obsessive former ballerina mother Erica (Hershey) who exerts a suffocating control over her. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side - a recklessness that threatens to destroy her.

Here's two dialogues between Nina and Thomas :

-I-

Nina: I came to ask for the part.

Thomas Leroy: The truth is when I look at you all I see is the white swan. Yes you're beautiful, fearful, and fragile. Ideal casting. But the black swan? It's a hard fucking job to dance both.

Nina: I can dance the black swan, too.

Thomas Leroy: Really? In four years every time you dance I see you obsessed getting each and every move perfectly right but I never see you lose yourself. Ever! All that discipline for what?

Nina: [whispers] I just want to be perfect.

Thomas Leroy: What?

Nina: I want to be perfect.

Thomas Leroy: [scoffs] Perfection is not just about control. It's also about letting go. Surprise yourself so you can surprise the audience. Transcendence! Very few have it in them.

Nina: I think I do have it in me.

-II-

Thomas Leroy: You could be brilliant, but you're a coward.

Nina: I'm sorry.

Thomas Leroy: [yelling] Now stop saying that! That's exactly what I'm talking about. Stop being so fucking weak!

Whiplash:

Jonathan Kimble Simmons as Terence Fletcher

A young and talented drummer attending a prestigious music academy finds himself under the wing of the most respected professor at the school, one who does not hold back on abuse towards his students. The two form an odd relationship as the student wants to achieve greatness, and the professor pushes him.

Here's also two dialogue between Fletcher and his student Andrew :

-I-

Andrew: [Andrew stop playing because Fletcher enters the room] I'm sorry, I...

Terence Fletcher: What's your name?

Andrew: Andrew Neiman sir.

Terence Fletcher: What year are you?

Andrew: I'm a... first year.

Terence Fletcher: You know who I am?

Andrew: Yes sir.

Terence Fletcher: So, you know that I'm looking for players?

Andrew: Yes sir.

Terence Fletcher: Then why did you stop playing?

[Andrew resumes playing]

Terence Fletcher: Did I ask you to star playing again?

Andrew: Uh... sorry , I...

Terence Fletcher: I ask why you stop playing and your version of an answer was to turn into a wind-up monkey.

Andrew: Sorry, I...

Terence Fletcher: Show me your rudiments.

Andrew: Yes sir.

[Andrew plays while Fletcher removes his jacket and puts it on a rack]

Terence Fletcher: Double-time swing.

[Andrew resumes playing]

Terence Fletcher: No, double time. Double it!

[Andrew resumes playing]

Terence Fletcher: Faster. Faster!

[Andrew continues playing until he hears Fletcher slam the door out]

Terence Fletcher: [Fletcher goes back to the room] Upsy-daisy. Forget my jacket!
